Crisis in Chenalhó and Chalchuitán

In a previous blog post we informed you about a crisis in Chiapas in which over 5,000 people were displaced from their homes, living outside on the mountainsides in the townships of Chalchuitán and Chenalhó.  Through the generosity of many donors, Weaving for Justice was able to send $3,086 to Cáritas, a Catholic Charity in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas which distributed corn, blankets, and other necessities to the people in the camps.

At this writing, March 2018, 1,000 people remained displaced in Chalchuitán, afraid to return to their homes.  We are grateful to Ana Cristina Vásguez Carpizo for sending us an article about the situation in the township and the roots of this crisis. Thanks also to Bill Jungels for translating Ana’s article.  We attach it here.
